Most people saw the abandoned Cub Foods on Johnson Ferry Road as a dilapidated eyesore, complete with broken glass, graffiti and rust. Led by Michael Paris, the YMCA of Cobb County Board of Directors had a completely different vision—a bustling community center, even open late on weekends for teens.

Looking to expand services into northern Cobb County, the YMCA concluded the Cub Foods property was a better alternative to buying outrageously priced land and waiting years to complete construction. And so, after lengthy negotiations, the Y closed the deal during Thanksgiving week 2003 and set in motion a whirlwind schedule for the facility's dramatic reincarnation.

In just four months and four days, Northeast Cobb YMCA was open. With an edgy, urban design and unique combination of fitness, indoor sports and high performance training, this new Y sure isn't anything like your father's YMCA. Which is exactly the point. Poised to bring fitness training and athletic performance to the next level, Northeast Cobb YMCA redefines what a YMCA is and can be.
